![]() ![]() I have not yet verified this myself, but there is a recent Reddit post reporting that when exporting from the Desktop client directly to a BitLockered drive (consistent with the recommendations given above), the export process creates a temporary copy of the unencrypted export in the default Downloads directory. Avoid saving these files to an unencrypted drive and then copying them to a secure location, because a very determined attacker might be able to retrieve deleted files from your computer, depending on the file system it uses. VeraCrypt volumes, Mac encrypted disk image volumes, or encrypted removable drives/flash drives are all good options. Thus, if you create unencrypted export files for your backup strategy, be sure to save them directly to an encrypted volume or drive that is secure. In the latter example, the photo is still there and possibly damaged, and with careful work you can still see it.Obviously, an unencrypted export file of all your vault contents is something you need to fiercely protect. But if you need a Star Trek-style metaphor, it’s the difference between physically cutting out a photo from a newspaper with scissors, or merely covering it up with a sticker. The issue gets into some pretty heavy technical jargon. Full, perfect recovery of the original file doesn’t appear to be possible at this time, but corrupted versions of the full-sized file could still show enough to recover sensitive text or images. Recovery tools can be used to make part of the original image visible again. As it turns out, the screenshot tools are incorrectly truncating the saved file, possibly leaving portions of the original, uncropped image behind. ![]() The issue stems from the way in which the tools save PNG files, specifically the way they overwrite files with the same name after an initial file has already been saved.
